5 Reasons to Read Your Bible Every Day

Hi dear friends, I hope you are all having a wonderful week so far! I'm so glad to be settling into the fall season, and to be able to finally wear cozy long sleeve shirts and sip on some hot tea at my desk while I do work :)

While I know this blog post title may not be the most exciting, it will be full of truth-filled reasons as to why it is so important to read your Bible each and every day. I promise you won't regret it!

Without further ado, let's jump into the 5 reasons why we should all be reading our Bibles every day.

5 Reasons to Read Your Bible Every Day

Reason #1: It is the only way to truly get to know the God you are worshipping

I wanted to start with this very basic but crucial reason: the Bible is the only way to truly know God. Sure, reading devotionals or listening to sermons by your favorite pastors can help shed the light on some aspects of God’s character that you may not have known about before, but nothing compares to reading the Bible on your own.

I like to think of the Bible as God’s journal, in which He has written down His most intimate thoughts. But instead of being kept private, His thoughts have been recorded and shared with us so that we may get to know Him intimately. Reading those pages reveals His heart for us, His beloved creation.

The truth is, if you don’t take the time to read God’s word, you are going to end up worshipping a version of God that you have made up in your own mind. You will not know the real heart of God, and in turn won’t be able to recognize His will for your life. It’s like trying to have a close friendship with someone that you only hear about from other people, but don’t want to spend time with yourself. You can try all you want, but it probably won’t lead to anything meaningful.

Taking the time to get in the Word each day will reveal God’s character and help you know who He truly is. And trust me: it will be far more beautiful than any version of Him you would create in your own mind.

Reason #2: It is full of wisdom and knowledge to guide your life

I think one of my favorite things about the Bible is the wisdom that can be applied to one's life. I especially love the book of Proverbs which talks about Wisdom as a lady, which is revealed in contrast to a foolish woman whose ways only lead to death.

What I find remarkable about the wisdom in the pages of the Bible is that it is often referred to in popular culture without people realizing where it comes from. Many wise concepts that are found in other religions find their origins in the Bible itself.

Here are a few “rules” that even many atheists have come to agree with:

  • “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” [Matthew 7:12]

  • "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom." [Proverbs 11:2]

  • "A fool always loses his temper, but a wise man holds it back." [Proverbs 29:11]

There is so much more to be learned by taking the time to read the Bible daily. In the same way that eating healthy food is good for your body, so can reading the Bible be likened to feeding your mind with the best content available to mankind.

Reason #3: It can help you combat spiritual warfare and evil attacks

Something that goes hand in hand with reading your Bible is memorizing scripture. Having verses written in your heart and mind is the best way to face the never-ending spiritual attacks of the devil.

I know I’m probably going to lose some people at the mention of the devil, but it’s actually quite simple: whether you believe it is a full fledged entity, or are more comfortable with the conceptual existence of evil, the Bible is clear that everything that does not come from God comes from the devil himself, the father of all lies.

James 3:14-15 says that “if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.”

In other words, when your heart is filled with jealousy and selfishness, that is from the devil. If you find yourself being sad or depressed, that is a spiritual attack. These things can only be properly combated with knowledge of the Word of God.

Even the devil knows what an effective strategy it is to poke holes at our lack of scriptural knowledge. Indeed, the serpent was the craftiest of all the animals in the garden of Eden. It is therefore no coincidence that he tempted Eve into sin by twisting God’s very word and taking advantage of her lack of knowledge of it. Next time you read Genesis, look at Genesis 2:16 (what God said) and compare it to Genesis 3:2 (what Eve says God said). Spoiler alert: it is not the exact same.

Reason #4: Scripture is our daily bread, which we need to survive

The same way that food sustains our bodies, scripture is the bread that sustains our spirits. It is by design that the Lord’s prayer as recounted in Matthew chapter 6 says “Give us this day our daily bread”. God could have chosen to provide us the spiritual food we need to sustain us for 1 week at a time, 1 month, even 1 year. But instead, he deliberately chose to provide us enough for one day at a time. This is the only way to ensure that we would be fully dependent on Him.

While full dependence can appear as a weakness, it’s actually just what we need to be humbled and reminded that God’s providence is a gift to be celebrated each and every day.

When the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt under the guidance of Moses, the Lord provided manna (a type of bread) every morning for them in response to their fear of starvation. It was the perfect way to soften their hearts and remind them to thank God for providing what they needed. They had to rely on God each day, because as soon as the hot sun would come out, the manna would melt. They would have to wait until the next morning before getting their next portion.

Similarly, the words of God found in the Bible are the bread of life. In the Gospel of John, it is recorded that Jesus said “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” [John 6:35] It is a beautiful depiction of a savior sacrificing His very body so that those whom He loves would have eternal life.

Reason #5: It is the best way to remind you of the life-altering power of the Gospel

Last but surely not least, reading our Bible is the best way to have a daily reminder of what Jesus accomplished for us. As believers, once the overwhelming joy of finding our salvation in Jesus Christ dies down a bit, it can be easy to lose our fire for Jesus and even forget why the Gospel is a big deal at all.

The truth is that Christians need the Gospel just as much as unbelievers. We need to be reminded of the Glory of the Salvation story each and every day, and the best way to do this is by reading our Bible.

The beauty of the Bible is that you don’t have to just read the 4 Gospels in order to be reminded of what Jesus did on the cross: every single one of the remaining 62 books all point to Jesus, from Genesis all the way to Revelation.

There you have it friends! I hope you enjoyed reading this post, and either learned something new or were reminded of something that needed to be brought back into focus.
